Walk to your fitness!

walking

If anyone says that you can achieve fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle without ever moving a muscle, be assured that they are most certainly not a fitness expert by profession.

It really is basic common sense: if you do not move your body, your body will not burn the extra calories it may have received from food. According to the law of thermodynamics, energy can either be created or stored but NOT destroyed. In this case, since your body cannot use the calories to produce energy, it would store them as fat, and you would eventually gain weight. A fairly simple explanation and certainly not rocket science to establish that there is a relationship between exercise and fitness.

Many people are reluctant to consider and some even panic when hearing the word exercise. But do not worry, we are not suggesting that you join an expensive gym and waste your money and energy there, neither would we ask that you jog or run for hours. All we ask is that you WALK. Yes, it is as simple as that, walking is indeed the key to staying fit and healthy without too much hassle. Walking is one exercise which anyone can do, from a young child to an 80-year old veteran.

walking-legsThere are many ways in which walking helps you. Walking moves your muscles, and when muscles and bones move, they stay fit and healthy. It takes you outdoors away from the television and the sofa and out into the fresh air and sunlight; totally beneficial for your good health.

Walking releases endorphins thereby it rids you of stress and depression. When you start walking, you should start to release your worries and just enjoy the walk. It is a cheap pastime – actually, it is totally free, since you do not need to buy any special exercise equipment or gadgets to walk. Although a pedometer can provide motivation as you see the number of steps you are taking and the calories burnt increasing as you go but really all you need is a pair of comfortable, athletic shoes and you are ready to put your best step forward.

If walking is not a perfect workout for you, I do not know what is.

However if you have never walked for either exercise or relaxation in your life there could be one major obstacle at the outset (be assured you are not alone ) – that of motivating yourself to walk daily. Perhaps it is too hot one day or on another it is raining outside. Under such circumstances, it is too easy to stay in the comfort zone of your room and too hard to take out those walking shoes and step outside. But do try to persevere if you maintain the routine of walking day after day, it really would soon become a habit.

Various studies indicate that it takes a human at least 21 days to form a new habit; however, once a habit is formed, it becomes more difficult to break it. This would apply to your walking routine. Once walking becomes a habit for you, you would feel uneasy if you broke the routine and really miss your regular venture outside for a walk. You would feel disturbed and that feeling would remain with you until your routine of a regular walk was restored.

That is exactly how a habit starts to motivate you and to ensure that you keep on doing what you have been doing. So, while the first 21 days might be tough for you, day 22 onwards, you would find that walking has become second nature.

If you currently visit a gym or exercise with home exercise equipment, that is fine. But please try to incorporate a daily walking routine to compliment. Walking certainly helps you burn calories; but more importantly, it keeps you in touch with the fresh air and sunlight which are a vital part of maintaining a healthy body and mind.

However no matter how much you walk, you also need to consider changing any unhealthy food habits. Your regular walk will prove to be even more beneficial if you remove junk foods from your diet and replace them with natural fruits and vegetables instead. Junk foods not only ruin your digestive system but also your overall health. When you eat junk food and processed foods, your digestion becomes sluggish and your body’s hormonal equilibrium is lost resulting in weight gain and loss of energy and vitality.

Try to ensure the foods you eat are as fresh and natural as possible combined with your daily walking routine you will very soon see results in a slimmer, healthier and fitter YOU.

What is Eating disorder?

Eating disorders involve extreme disturbances in eating behaviors—following rigid diets, gorging on food in secret, throwing up after meals, obsessively counting calories. But eating disorders are more complicated than just unhealthy dietary habits. At their core, eating disorders involve distorted, self-critical attitudes about weight, food, and body image. It’s these negative thoughts and feelings that fuel the damaging behaviors.

People with eating disorders use food to deal with uncomfortable or painful emotions. Restricting food is used to feel in control. Overeating temporarily soothes sadness, anger, or loneliness. Purging is used to combat feelings of helplessness and self-loathing. Over time, people with eating disorders lose the ability to see themselves objectively and obsessions over food and weight come to dominate everything else in life.

Main causes of eating disorder are:

Family problems. Some individuals with eating disorders come from disordered families. The families of anorexic patients are often characterized by extremely controlling parents and poor boundaries between the parents and the child.

Social problems – Most people who develop eating disorders report having painfully low self-esteem before the onset of their eating problems. Many patients describe going through a painful experience such as being teased about their appearance, being shunned, or going through a difficult break-up of a romantic relationship.

Major illness or injury can also result in an individual feeling extremely vulnerable or out of control. Anorexia and bulimia can be attempts to control or distract themselves from such trauma.

Self Esteem – The one trait that is obviously apparent in all sufferers of an Eating Disorder is their low self-esteem. Often they feel as though they are not good enough, that they never do anything right, that they are scrutinized by others for their appearance, and that their lives would get better if they could just lose weight. Sufferers can feel like they do not deserve to be happy, that they do not deserve good things to happen to them, and that they don’t deserve to have anything but what is felt as a miserable existence.

Gender- It is widely understood that eating disorders usually affect women, although eating disorders in males are on the rise. Because women are affected more often, being female must be considered a risk factor that cannot be controlled.

Dieting- Dieting is one behavior that deserves special attention due to its profound effect on the development of eating disorders

Genetics- Research is always looking for ways in which genetics may make eating disorders more likely. What science is learning is intriguing.

Biological factors- Temperament seems to be, at least in part, genetically determined. Some personality types (obsessive-compulsive and sensitive-avoidant, for example) are more vulnerable to eating disorders than others. New research suggests that genetic factors predispose some people to anxiety, perfectionism, and obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors. These people seem to have more than their share of eating disorders.

Psychological factors- People with eating disorders often are legitimately angry, but because they seek approval and fear criticism, they do not dare express that anger directly. They do not know how to express it in healthy ways. They turn it against themselves by starving or stuffing.

Cultural pressures- Westernized countries characterized by competitive striving for success, and in pockets of affluence in developing countries, women often experience unrealistic cultural demands for thinness. They respond by linking self-esteem to weight.

Anyways To Advance Weight Loss While On The Computer?

Hi. I was wondering about weight loss. I do not want to lose weight on my belly and I exercise every day and I diet (very good and healthy food). Is there something to improve or advance weight loss while sitting on the computer?

Reminding you that I exercise and diet, every day, very healthy, and I was wondering if I can improve weight loss even when I am simply doing nothing or if I’m sitting on the computer.

Eating Disorders – An Overview Of The Types And Causes

There are several different types of eating disorders. The most common being Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge eating. With Anorexia Nervosa the person starves themselves allowing their body weight to get to 85% or less than what it should be for their height and age.

A person with Bulimia is trapped in a downward spiral. They diet to a point where they feel so hungry that they have to eat, so they binge and then purge all of the food out because they feel guilty for eating. They go back on their diet and promise they will never do it again but when they break their promise the guilt means that they repeat the cycle.

Binging is where the person eats large quantities of food frequently and on more than one occasion. When a person binge eats they feel out of control and feel as if they cannot stop eating all the while feeling guilty about what they are doing. Those that suffer from this eating disorder have a tendency to be obese and depressed.

A number of factors can trigger an eating disorder. It can be anything from psychological to genetic. Genetic factors actually account for more than half of the causes for developing Anorexia. Interestingly, a person who’s mother or sister suffered from Anorexia Nervosa are twelve times more likely to develop the eating disorder than someone with no family history.

With the same situation a person is four times more likely to develop Bulimia. Everything from family to friends to one’s culture plays a role in the development of an eating disorder. Most people who develop this type of illness have a tendency to be perfectionists and have a lack of a sense of identity. These factors along with other personality traits can make one more susceptible.

Eating disorders can affect both sexes. For every four women who suffer from Anorexia Nervosa there is one man who suffers from it as well. Likewise one male to every eight to eleven females suffer from Bulimia.

When it comes to binge eating it is nearly an equal ratio of male to female victims of the disorder. Granted, the number of men reporting symptoms of eating disorders is on the rise but this can be attributed to a number of factors. This could be because there is a greater awareness of the possibility that they can suffer from it or because they are in activities that have a strict weight requirement. These men might be involved in a profession or sport that have a strict weight requirement like Law Enforcement, horse racing and wrestling. Interestingly, many men who develop eating disorders were overweight as a child.

Eating disorders are serious illnesses that can kill. The friend or loved one requires professional mental and physical help. What they are going through is not a fad that will pass away with time. As a loved one you can be there for them without judgment or condemnation being a gentle positive influence on how they perceive themselves.
